Types of Mobs

There are different types of mobs, who have different behaviors and mechanics.

Minecraft mobs are grouped in six main categories.

Passive Mobs

Passive mobs wander around at random like other mobs, but when hurt, they flee in random directions. Passive mobs generally have weaker health and when killed, they do not drop especially valuable things. When killed, they can drop food, however, and food is vital in survival or hardcore mode.

Neutral Mobs

Neutral mobs will remain neutral until a player or mob attacks. When attacked, they will turn hostile and attack the player or mob attacking it. Some neutral mobs will also become aggressive when a same variety of mob is killed and the attacker is near enough to them.

Hostile Mobs

Hostile mobs will automatically face, chase, and attack the player as soon as the player is in their sight. Creepers are common hostile mobs in the Overworld. Hostile mobs generally like the dark and can be found more in mining areas or caverns.

Utility Mobs

Utility mobs can be crafted out of certain block formations, found naturally spawned, or summoned. They are generally used to protect villages and buildings. Utility mobs have some of the strongest attacks in the Overworld, besides a creeper's explosion.

Boss Mobs

Boss mobs are very powerful, very dangerous mobs that are generally hostile. Boss mobs have very high health, attack, and experience points. They can drop very valuable items and slaying the Ender Dragon opens the only portal back to the Overworld. Ender Dragons and Withers are mostly found in The End. In The End, there is one Ender Dragon, the boss of The End.

Tamable Mobs

Tamable mobs can be tamed by feeding or any way to get hearts to float out of the mob. Sometimes tamable mobs are spawned tamed, but this is rare. Tamable mobs like wolves can attack mobs to defend the player when tamed.
